Hi mama blossom!! So I've always identified as bisexual but I don't quite understand the difference between bi and pan or if identifying as bisexual is exclusionary to transgendered people? Do you have any insight?
I wish I had more insight to give you. I would say that many people who identify as bisexual often don’t feel their attraction to women and men as purely 50/50. Sometimes it’s 20% men and 80% women. Maybe it’s 40% women and 60% men. Being attracted to both isn’t always clear cut and sexuality is a spectrum so sometimes it changes over time. Labels can be nice when you’re trying to define yourself to other people and define your sexuality but you don’t necessarily have to subscribe to any term if you don’t feel like it describes you accurately. I don’t have much experience with the difference between bisexual and pansexual. Maybe someone more experienced can comment in the replies below.
Some people still think that bi= only attraction to 2 genders, and that pan= attraction to all genders, but that is false. I’m bi and have met a lot of bi people, and have only heard 1 person, maybe 2 people have say that they’re only attracted to men and women. The ways I most often see bisexuality framed within the LGBT+ community are “attraction to my own gender and other genders”, and “attraction to 2 or more genders”.
The other distinction some people make is that bisexuals are attracted to different genders in different ways, and pansexuals are attracted to all genders in the same way. However, you can totally be bi and attracted to all genders in similar ways.
It’s really just about choosing the label that clicks with you the most. There were a lot of biphobic, often transphobic (in terms of othering/fetishizing trans people) ideas about pansexuality being “more evolved” than bisexuality floating around the internet around 2010-2012ish, so people are still confused about what bisexuality is from that time.
